Former African head of states, mostly constitutionalists, met in Niamey-Niger, as part of an international conference related to the promotion and the solidification of Democracy in Africa. Among the distinguished participants were former head of states Mahamane Ousmane of Niger, Nicéphore Soglo of Benin, Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, Catherine Samba-Panza of the Central African Republic and Amos Sawyer of Liberia. Each of these leaders passionately pleaded for a 2 term presidential limit in Africa. They unanimously agreed that “The removal of limitation on presidential term undermines the conscience of the people and increases the concentration of power in the hands of a minority” as one can read in the joint statement.
